How to Clean Brushed Leather Couches

    General Cleaning

    • 1). Vacuum any dust, dirt or hair from the leather surface using the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Do not use one of the larger attachments, as leather scratches easily. You can also use a soft duster to remove surface debris.

    • 2). Fill a bowl with warm distilled water, and mix in a few drops of mild dish detergent (such as Ivory or Dawn) until suds form. Fill another bowl with plain warm distilled water.

    • 3). Dampen a washrag in the soapy water and wipe down a section of the couch. Work in small sections, so that the soapy water does not have time to dry on the leather surface.

    • 4). Dampen a second rag in the plain water and wipe the same section, removing soap suds.

    • 5). Use a third, dry rag to dry the freshly cleaned area. Repeat the cleaning until the whole surface of the couch has been cleaned.

    • 6). Treat the sofa with leather polish or conditioner to restore shine. These products are available from your manufacturer or a furniture store. Apply per product instructions with a clean, soft cloth.

    Stain Removal

    • 1). Blot spills with a paper towel or clean rag as soon as they happen to remove as much liquid as possible, limiting the stain.

    • 2). Soak a clean rag in plain warm distilled water and blot at the stain from the outside in. Do not scrub, as this can scratch the leather or force the stain deeper into the surface.

    • 3). Soak the corner of a rag in rubbing alcohol and blot onto the stain, using the same process as the water. This can be used for stubborn stains such as ink.

    • 4). Apply a special cleaning paste for dark stains such as food or blood. Mix equal parts cream of tartar and lemon juice to form a paste. Apply the paste to the stain and leave it sit for 10 minutes. Remove the paste with normal cleaning techniques.

    • 5). Dab the area dry with a clean towel or rag.
