Marine Corps Selected Reserves Reenlistment Bonus Program

The Marine Corps has announce a reenlistment bonus program and G.I. Bill "Kicker" for the Marine Corps Reserves for Fiscal Year 2008 (October 1 2007 to 30 September 2008).

To qualify for the bonus program, Marines must reenlist for a minimum of three years. The minimum reenlistment period for the G.I. Bill Kicker program is six years. Here are the specifics of the FY 2008 program:

Reenlistment Bonuses


  • A Reserve Marine may only receive a maximum of two Reserve reenlistment bonuses during their career. For FY 2008, The first-time reenlistment bonus is $7,500 and the 2nd reenlistment bonus is $6,000, paid in a lump sum.
  • Marines must be eligible for, and recommended for reenlistment.
  • Must be serving in a validated billet commensurate with their grade and Primary Military Occupational Specialty (PMOS)
  • Must have completed required PMOS training for their MOS
  • Must be in the grade of Sergeant or Staff Sergeant. Sergeants must have not more than 10 satisfactory years on the date of reenlistment, and not more than 16 total years of Military service. Staff Sergeants must not have more than 15 satisfactory years on the date of reenlistment, and not more than 16 total years of Military service. Additionally, to be eligible, Staff Sergeants must not have been selected for Gunnery Sergeant.
  • Marines qualifying for a 2nd reenlistment bonus may reenlist no earlier than 30 days prior to their end of their current contract, but not later than the date on which the enlistment for which the first bonus would expire.


  • Marines currently on their 8-year military service obligation (MSO) must be within one year of their MOS expiring.

Recoupment of the reenlistment bonus, at a prorated amount will be accomplished if the Marine:
  • a. Fails to to fulfill the enlistment obligation
    b. Fails to participate satisfactory
    c. Executes a lateral move
    d. Executes an inter-unit transfer without CMC (RAP) approval
    e. Transfers to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR)
    f. Performs active duty special worth with a unit other than their own for a period greater than 90 days
    g. Serves as an individual augmentee or as an individual mobilization augmentee
    h. Augments to Active Duty (AD) or the Active Reserve Program

Recoupment will not occur if a recipient is required to involuntarily transfer to the IRR due to unit deactivation, redesignation, having twice failed selection to the next higher grade, or disability.

G.I. Bill "Kicker"

This incentive provides educational assistance payments of $350 per month for up to 36 months of full time education, in addition to current MGIB payments. The payments are authorized in conjunction with either the Active Duty Montgomery GI Bill (ADMGIB), or use with the Selected Reserve Montgomery G.I. Bill (SRMGIB). Payments may be pro-rated for less than full time college enrollment.
  • Marines must reenlist for a period of six years between October 1, 2007 and 30 September 2008.
  • Marines must be qualified and recommended for reenlistment
  • Marines must be serving in a validated billet commensurate with their grade and PMOS.
  • Marines must have completed the required PMOS training.
