- 1). Inspect the tree to find the direction it is naturally leaning. Let the tree fall in this direction if it will not cause any damage.
- 2). Cut one-fourth of the way through the tree, on the side of the tree lean. Cut downward at a 70-degree angle.
- 3). Slice into the first cut to make a 90-degree angle wedge. Cut upward at a 20-degree angle to meet the first cut.
- 4). Touch the saw blade to the opposite side of the wedge and cut until the saw meets the wedge. The tree will fall in the direction of the wedge. Be sure you are in a safe place when the tree begins to fall.
- 5). Trim the limbs from the fallen tree while standing on the opposite side of the trunk. Start at the bottom of the tree trunk and work toward the top. Cut the trunk into manageable logs. Be careful not to run the chain saw into the ground, this will dull the chain.
