How to Get to Vung Tau? Bus, Ferry and Taxi

HCMC to Vung Tau

As of the moment, 1 USD = 20,900 VND

By Bus:

This is easy. Just go to the streets of Bui Vien, Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham (Backpacker's area) and you will find a number of travel agents where you can buy bus tickets to Vung Tau. The ticket is 85,000 VND if you take Phuong Trang. Here's their website: Futa Buslines (Phuong Trang)

There's also a bus station at 52 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia st..Ticket's around 60,000VND.

Tip: Book your ticket a day or two in advance as seats are easily filled up especially on the weekends.

By Ferry (hydrofoil):

The most popular mode of transport to Vung Tau which I always prefer. It's faster (75 to 90 minutes) and less hassle if you have kids.

The pier is on 51 Ham Nghi, Phuong Nguyen Thai Binh, District 1, HCMC. Do you know where the Bitexco Financial Tower is? Ah, it's close to this place. Type the address on Google Maps on your phone or tablet. You will see the most prominent landmark Hotel Majestic; the pier is opposite this hotel. Popular choices are Greenlines and Vinaexpress.

Tickets for Adults: Weekdays 200,000VND, Weekends 250,000VND

Kids: Weekdays 100,000VND, Weekends 120,000VND

Tip: Book in advance or go there the earliest like we did. We came in at 6.30 am and managed to get tickets for 9.30am. Also, they don't really follow the schedule on their ticket booth which means you have to be there to ask them for it. Oh, just in case you'd be seated at the rear side, take your hanky or scarf, the fume from the engine is unbearable:s On our way back, we asked to place us on the front seats; it's fume-free and scenic.

By Taxi:

I called up Mai Linh and Vinasun taxi companies to find out the fare from HCMC to Vung Tau. They quoted 2,800,000VND. Last year, we took Mai Linh and it only cost 2,000,000VND. This takes at least 3 hours.

Tip: Call the company first so you'd know how much it'd cost to get to Vung Tau. Operators give you the €official rate' according to distance. And you get a bit of a discount if you book a return trip.

The three modes of transport I enumerated were the ones I have tried. Although some took mini-buses and others chose to ride on a bike to Vung Tau. I don't really recommend the latter as it could be dangerous and exhausting.

Thanks for reading and I hope you find this post helpful!
