- 1). You will begin to dehydrate if you stop drinking water. An average weight person should drink eight to 12 glasses of water each day. If you are heavier, this number is higher since your body requires more water for optimal function.
- 2). Dehydration will occur if you sweat a lot. No matter what the temperature is, if you are sweating your body is losing water. Replace these lost fluids by drinking above your normal daily intake.
- 3). Sickness can cause dehydration. Fevers, vomiting and diarrhea all cause a loss of water. While you cannot avoid getting sick, you can drink plenty of water to help flush the toxins out of your body.
- 4). Caffeinated drinks and alcohol instead of water will cause dehydration. Neither of these beverages contain much water and caffeine is known to be a diuretic, which means it depletes your body of its water supply.
- 5). Sitting in the sun will cause dehydration. Even if it is not hot outside, the sun will absorb some water from your body.
- 6). Living at a high altitude will cause your body to dehydrate. If the altitude you live at is 3,000 feet above sea level, you live in a high-altitude area. People living at high altitude dehydrate faster due to environmental factors.
