When most people think of New Hampshire, they do not think of Hollywood glamor. In fact, the state is pretty much on the exact opposite end of the country when you look at a map. It is a small state, as well, and consequently not to many satellite TV or movie stars have emerged from its beautiful mountainous terrain. With less than a million people to call its own, the few big names who have emerged are known far and wide, from the shores of the Atlantic ocean in Portsmouth, to the far reaches of the Canadian border. So the next time you are watching satellite TV, see if you can spot one of these great natives of the granite state. Without further ado, here are the few, the proud, the Hollywood elite from New Hampshire:
1. Adam Sandler
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1966, Sandler was moved by his family to Manchester, the biggest city in the state, when he was age 5. He lived in Manchester until he moved to New York for college, attending Manchester Central High School. Sandler says that he bases much of his comedic material on his experiences growing up. He is still very much attached to New Hampshire, which he considers his home state, having donated $1 million to the Boys and Girls Club in Manchester in 2007.
2. Sarah Silverman
Adam Sandler is not the only Jewish comedian that you can find on satellite TV who calls New Hampshire home. Sarah Silverman, along with her slightly less famous older sister Laura, grew up in Bedford, a suburb of 20,000 people outside of Manchester. Sarah was the youngest of four, raised by a social worker who ran a discount clothing store (her father, Donald) and a photographer who founded a local theater company called New Thalian Players (hew mother, Beth Ann Halpin). She attended a private school in Manchester, before moving to the Big Apple to attend New York University, just like Sandler. Her family still lives in New Hampshire, where she returns for regular visits.
3. Seth Meyers
The SNL actor Seth Meyers is yet another funny man to emerge from the state, also from Bedford like Silverman. (The two are three years apart, with Meyers being born in 1973 and Silverman in 1970. They are not known to be friends). He went to a public high school called Manchester High School West. Meyers actually moved all the way to Chicago to attend Northwestern University, where he was part of the well-known frat house Phi Gamma Delta. It was also there that he joined an improv sketch comedy troop, called Mee-Ow, and then moved his way through the Chicago improve scene. He even temporarily resided in Amsterdam as part of the English-language comedy troupe called Boom Chicago before eventually joining the cast of SNL and coming to host the popular Weekend Update segment. Seth is not the only comedian in the family; his younger brother Josh was also part of the Amsterdam group, and eventually worked on MADtv.
