How to Defrag Log Files

    Installing Contig

    • 1). Download "Contig" from the Microsoft Sysinternals website. At publication date, the most up-to-date version of Contig is 1.6 and requires Windows XP or newer.

    • 2). Unzip Contig onto the desktop by right-clicking the "Contig.zip" file and dragging it to a location on your desktop. Select "Extract" from the contextual menu to bring up the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" wizard. Click the "Extract" button to complete the unzipping process.

    • 3). Copy contig.exe into the "System32" directory, which is located by opening the "C:" drive and opening the "Windows" folder.

    Running Contig

    • 1). Launch a command line window by clicking the "Start" menu, clicking "All Programs," clicking "Accessories," and then clicking "Command Prompt." You can also launch a command line window by typing "cmd" into the Start menu search box and pressing the "Enter" key.

    • 2). Type "contig FILEPATH\file.ext" without the quotation marks and replace "FILEPATH" with the full file path of the log file you want to defragment. Replace "file.ext" with the filename and file extension of the log file. You can find the full file path by browsing to the folder in Windows and looking at the location bar at the top of the folder window.

    • 3). Wait until the file defragment process is finished and close the command line window.
