- 1). Attend a credit counseling session with an approved credit counseling agency in Arizona. This session will help teach you to manage your money better, and you will discuss your bankruptcy options with a qualified credit counselor. The U.S. Justice Department's website provides a list of approved credit counseling agencies in Arizona (see Resources).
- 2). Determine which form of bankruptcy you intend to file. If you are looking for a "fresh start," Chapter 7 may be right for you. To reorganize your debt, consider Chapter 13.
- 3). Obtain the bankruptcy forms. You can visit your nearest bankruptcy court, or download the forms from the U.S. Courts website. Use the checklist provided by the U.S. Courts to help you find the required forms for the type of bankruptcy you intend to file (see Resources).
- 4). Complete the required forms. The forms are lengthy but relatively straightforward. You must provide information about your income, assets, debt and monthly expenses.
- 5). Send or hand-deliver the completed forms to the bankruptcy court located nearest to your residence. Arizona has bankruptcy courts in Phoenix, Prescott and Yuma. Use the court located nearest to your house. Filing fees are subject to change; contact the bankruptcy court for the current fee schedule.
