Question: What Causes Heartburn?

People often are unaware what causes heartburn. It is sometimes called pyrosis or acid indigestion and results to a burning sensation in your throat or chest, more commonly known as heartburn. This uncomfortable burning sensation is not at all life-threatening but for those that experience them often and unaware of it may think that it has something to do with their heart. This is because of the radiating pain that seems rise from the chest. Oftentimes, the pain goes up to the neck, throat and the angle part of the jaw.

Causes

So what causes heartburn? One of the most common causes of pyrosis is GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is a recurring condition where the stomach acids backflows into the esophagus and causes so much discomfort.  Generally, heartburn issues have less chances of occurring if our digestive system was in tip top shape. The lower esophageal sphincter or LES, is a group of muscles fibers that connects the esophagus and the stomach. The LES opens and closes to allow food pass through and prevents the acid from the stomach from going back up into the esophagus. Once this group of muscles becomes weak or it starts to relax, this allows the stomach acids to go back up causing the discomforting pain known as heartburn. This often occurs after eating or during the night. It distinctively becomes worse when one bends over or lies down.

Other contributory factors of heartburn are downing large amounts of foods, especially those that are acidic, spicy, high fat foods, cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol. Asthmatic and diabetic patients also experiences or triggers heartburn as well. Those that are diagnosed with hiatal hernia experience the same discomfort.  For pregnant women they normally experience burning sensations on the chest because of excess pressure on the LES that goes for overweight people too. But the most important is that it is s symptom of ischaematic heart disease, sometimes known as myocardial ischaema. This is a coronary heart disease where there is a reduced supply of blood to the heart muscle.  It is vital that one must visit their doctor to rule out this disease. Other cardiac diagnosis are myocardial infraction and angina.

Keeping It In Check

The course of treatment will depend on the diagnosis or cause of the burning sensation. Oftentimes, people take these symptoms for granted and do not really take the time to have it checked. Unless of course it becomes more frequent and interferes with their work or way of living in many ways. With the help of a medical professional, those that suffer heartburn may reduce or eliminate their suffering by making comprehensible adjustments on their lifestyle. Examples of such are eating balanced meals, eating meals in smaller portions but spread throughout the day, getting enough sleep, avoiding tight clothing, wearing belts too tightly, waiting for at least 3 hours after meals before lying down, maintain your average weight, and lastly keeping a record your heartburn occurrences as well as keeping track of what causes heartburn.

If you are suffering from acid reflux, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome or other digestive health problems then you will need a digestive enzymes supplement and prebiotics because they work naturally to help you feel better (and stop your suffering).
