- 1). Find the primary side voltage, or Vp. Refer to transformer specifications. As an example, assume Vp is 480 volts.
- 2). Find the secondary side voltage, or Vs. Refer to transformer specifications. As an example, assume Vs is 208.
- 3). Calculate the turns ratio using the formula: Ratio = Vp/Vs. Continuing with the example numbers:
Turns Ratio = 480/208 = 2.30
The ratio is 2.30 to 1 or 2.30:1, which represents a step down relationship between the primary and secondary windings. Therefore, in this example, if you apply 240 volts to the primary side, you will get approximately 104 volts out of the secondary side of the transformer: (240/2.30)
