Under this program, private tax software companies partner with the IRS to allow you to prepare and file your federal taxes online for free if you meet their income and residence requirements. Most of these companies, however, charge a fee for you to complete your state tax return in the same manner.

    H&R Block Free File

    • H&R Block's Free File program allows individuals to prepare and file federal income taxes for free if they meet two requirements. They must have been 51 years old or younger on Dec.31 of the year for which the tax return is being filed. In addition, their adjusted gross income for that year cannot have exceeded $57,000. The program is available to residents of all U.S. states.

    I-Can! Free File

    • At I-CanFreeFile.org, you can use the site's Internet-based software for free to prepare and electronically file your federal tax return if your adjusted gross income is $32,000 or less, or if you qualify for the Earned Income Credit. If you don’t meet either requirement, you can still prepare your federal tax return online and print it for free. Then you can mail it to the IRS or, if you can e-file it for $9.95. This program is available to residents of all states for federal tax filing.

    TurboTax Freedom Edition

    • The TurboTax Freedom Edition is a program that lets you prepare and file your federal tax return online for free as long as you fall in one of three situations: Your adjusted gross income is $31,000 or less; you are on active military duty and your adjusted gross income is $57,000 or less; or you qualify for the Earned Income Credit. This program is available to residents of all states.

    TaxSlayer

    • TaxSlayer offers both free federal and state tax return preparation and filing using its online software if your adjusted gross income is less than $57,000 and one of the following also applies: you are 25 years old or younger; you are at least 65 years old; you are on active military duty; or you qualify for the Earned Income Credit (EIC). In addition, if your adjusted gross income is $10,000 or less, you can also use this free service regardless of your age, military status and EIC eligibility. This program is for residents of all states.
