- 1). Discuss the decision with your elderly loved one. It is important for the person who will be moved, to understand what will happen, why it will happen and what the outcome will be. You should also discuss this decision with other family members to gain insight about their feelings. Allow them to have input with regard to what outsource avenues will be explored.
- 2). Contact senior citizen organizations to obtain recommendations of overseas companies willing to work with American clients. Be sure to inquire about local families that may be willing to share their experiences with you as you begin your search for a facility.
- 3). Visit the websites of several elderly care organizations willing to work with non-citizen residents. Narrow the field to a few that appear to have everything you are looking for and contact them by phone or email. Provide a list of questions regarding things you want to know about how they will care for your loved one, how they handle medications, medical emergencies and other issues.
- 4). Compare the results of your phone and email inquiries. Discuss the results with your loved one and choose a facility to tour. Make arrangements to tour the facility without your loved one initially so you can get a feel of the organization without disrupting your loved one's life unnecessarily.
- 5). Sign contracts with the facility you choose. Once the contracts are signed you can move your loved one to her new home. Make arrangements to stay in the area as long as possible to be able to visit daily, then less frequently as your loved one adjusts to the new surroundings and staff members.
- 6). Visit frequently after you return home. This not only reminds your loved one that he is not forgotten, but it also allows you to check on the care he is receiving. Send lots of cards, letters and photographs to your loved one between visits. Maintain an email or phone relationship with staff members so you are kept abreast of any concerns or issues that arise with regard to your loved one.
