- 1). Fulfill basic requirements. You must be an American citizen at least 20 years old by the date of your application. Your weight must be commensurate with your height and body frame. You must have no physical disabilities that would hamper your ability to do police work. You must not have any crime convictions other than a misdemeanor. Your driving record must not contain any traffic offenses that led to suspension or revocation of your driving privileges, and you must not have acquired more than six points against your driving record in the past three years.
- 2). Obtain at least a high school diploma or GED. Applicants with college or other university level education are preferred.
- 3). Reside in North Carolina for at least 12 months prior to the date on your application.
- 4). Fill out an application for employment and turn it in to the Sanford Police Department. This application will be in the form of a personal history statement, which covers personal information, work history, education and some other questions. This form can be found on the Sanford Police Department website.
- 5). Fill out Form 14, on which you will answer basic questions. Turn this, along with your personal history statement, in to the Sanford Police Department. This form can also be found on the Sanford Police Department website.
- 6). Pass an interview, which will be conducted by the Sanford Police Department. This interview will help determine whether you are morally fit for police work and would make a quality addition to the police department.
- 7). Pass a depth perception test. Vision of 20/20 in each eye is required. Uncorrected 20/50 vision is allowed in each eye, as long as that is correctable using lenses. Color blindness or night blindness will disqualify you from police work.
- 8). Pass a background investigation. This will include a check of state and federal records.
- 9). Pass exams and tests, including a physical exam, which means meeting physical standards that are set by an approved physician. Other tests include a polygraph test, psychological screening and drug test.

Complete Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET), which includes more than 600 hours, both in the classroom and hands on, as well as several tests and exams. Upon completion, you will be a certified police officer in North Carolina and will be a police officer with the city of Sanford.
