- 1). Inspect your in-ground pool cover before you close down the pool for the winter. If there are any rips or tears in the cover, you will need to get a new one or repair the damage with duct tape.
- 2). Fill up the water tubes if the in-ground pool cover contains them. Use a garden hose and leave about 15 percent empty space in the tubes. When the water freezes, it will expand.
- 3). Check the water tubes carefully. Squeeze them to make sure there are no rips or tears.
- 4). Place the cover over your in-ground pool. Align the water tubes around the edges. The cover might also have some way to secure it to the sides, such as ties or clamps. Check the owner's manual for more specific directions.
- 5). Clean off the in-ground pool cover periodically during the winter months. Skim off debris with a pool skimmer, and remove water and melting snow with a pool cover pump.
