- 1). Pour wood chips into cat's litter box, covering at least the bottom fourth of the box. If you are transitioning a cat from clay-based litter, pour a one-inch layer of wood chips in the box and cover it with the clay-based litter.
- 2). Scoop out soiled wood chips daily with a scooper.
- 3). Replace wood chips weekly or more often depending on how many cats use the box. Also consider the odor when determining how often to replace the chips. The Animal Humane Society suggests cleaning the litter box with a mild dish liquid every time the old litter is discarded and replaces with fresh litter.
- 4). Use a mixture of wood chips and clay-based litter after the second cleaning if you are transitioning a cat to the new litter. Use wood chips completely after the third cleaning.
