- 1). Sip on clear fluids. Stomach viruses, particularly those that cause diarrhea, can cause you to be dehydrated---which can make you feel worse (or lead to more serious conditions). Water, apple juice decaffeinated tea or flat ginger ale are good choices.
- 2). Avoid eating large amounts. Give your digestive system time to settle down and heal for the first 24 hours.
- 3). Reintroduce bland, easily digestible foods like toast, bananas, apple sauce and rice when you begin eating. Avoid greasy, spicy or acidic foods which can further irritate your stomach lining.
- 4). Don't stop the diarrhea or vomiting with over-the-counter medicines unless you are told to by your health care provider. Although it is unpleasant, it's your body's way of flushing out the infection.
- 5). Try time-tested natural remedies for more relief. A tea made from chamomile, mint leaves or ginger (served at room temperature) have been used by various cultures for hundreds of years to ease nausea.
- 6). Stay home and rest. Aside from the fact that stomach viruses are highly contagious, your body needs its energy to fight this viral infection.
