- 1). Remove as much of the vegetation as possible from the growing bed you are covering with the landscape fabric. A rototiller will cultivate the soil and aid in removing the green matter.
- 2). Smooth the growing bed with the garden rake. Discard all errant vegetative matter and rocks.
- 3). Unroll the landscape fabric over the growing bed. Cut the material to length. Use the scissors to make irregular shapes to fit the material to the bed.
- 4). Overlap the material by 2 to 3 inches for wider beds that exceed the width of the fabric.
- 5). Insert the landscape securing pins through the material and into the soil every 24 inches in all directions. The securing pins will hold the material temporarily in place while you plant.
- 6). Cut openings in the material by making a large X with the scissors. Fold the loose material under the fabric. Place the plants in the soil.
- 7). Cover the fabric with 2 to 3 inches of mulch or gravel to permanently hold the fabric in place.
