- 1). Collect the sporting equipment you'd like to donate. Make a list of the items and their approximate age. Inspect the equipment for any flaws that make the equipment unusable or unsafe. Although not all organizations will want to know this information when you donate your equipment, it is good to know in case you are asked. This process also lets you discard or recycle any items that have no use left in them and cannot be donated.
- 2). Make a list of potential places to donate your items to. These can include local thrift stores that often benefit charities. If you want to donate to a league, ask for a referral from a friend for a deserving organization or one that can make the best use of your items.
- 3). Call each location you would like to donate to and ask if they are able to accept your donation. This is advisable in case the organization has any rules about when it takes donations and what kind of material it accepts. In the case of a thrift store, it may be full of stock and not want to take any more.
- 4). Arrange for pick-up of your donation or drop it off at the organization's location. If the organization is picking up your donation, package it as they specify and leave it where they ask you to. For example, leave it outside the front door with the initials of the organization written on it. If you are dropping off your donation, do it in the area of the location that is specified. For example, many thrift stores want large items such as hockey sticks to be dropped off in its warehouse or loading dock.
