- You will need tile primer, top coat, a synthetic and natural bristle brush, a nail brush (or old toothbrush), fine sandpaper (with a hand held orbital sander for best results) and detergent.
- If you have crumbling grout, mildew stains, or cracked bathroom tiles be sure to address these issues before you get started. Replace tiles instead of filling them for a more professional finish. Fixing these problems after you've finished will often require repainting the whole bathroom.
- Before you jump into the project, clean the bathroom tile with a mild abrasive cleaner. You can purchase a specialty product at your local home improvement store, or just pick up a bottle of decent detergent.
Use a nail brush or an old toothbrush to get into those hard-to-reach corners and the grouted areas. You don't want any build up to give you an uneven look. - Bathroom tile has a high gloss, making it difficult to paint over. For the best finished product, sand the bathroom tiles with a handheld orbital sander, using a 220 fine grit sandpaper. The sandpaper should remove the gloss so the paint will adhere better, but a fine sandpaper won't mar the surface texture.
- After you've finished sanding, wipe everything down again. Dust particles under the paint can keep you from obtaining the smooth look you are shooting for.
- When you're satisfied that you've removed all the dust, paint the bathroom tiles with the primer using the synthetic bristle brush. Be careful not to let the paint drip as this will appear in your final product.
- Once the primer has dried, apply the gloss paint to the bathroom tile with the natural bristle brush and let it dry.
