- 1). Detach the baseboards from the walls of the room, if applicable, with a hammer and pry bar. Also remove any metal transition strips installed at doorways or wall openings.
- 2). Heat the surface of a single vinyl tile using a heat gun. Begin at an edge next to a wall or in a doorway. As the vinyl heats and becomes pliable, wedge the end of a pry bar or putty knife under the edge and bend the tile upward from the floor surface. The concentrated heat softens the tile's adhesive backing to ease the removal.
- 3). Repeat Step 2 to continue removing tiles, working the heat back and forth over each tile until it becomes flexible enough to lift the edge and pull the tile upward to detach it from the floor.
