- 1). Measure the width of your carport at the top of your current structure, measuring from the standing wall to the outside edge of the support.
- 2). Measure the length of your carport from the outside edges of your end supports. Double-check your sizes, as these will be essential in ensuring your carport roof trusses are structurally sound.
- 3). Divide the length of your carport by 2 feet to calculate the number of trusses you need, excluding the sides of the frame which may already be cross-supporting. Two-foot centers for roof trussing are industry standard, and will ensure the weight of your roofing materials can be spread evenly.
- 4). Cut the number of required widths from your lengths of 2-by-4, making sure you cut a few extra for wastage.
- 5). Mark the positions of your trusses at 2 feet to the center along the length of your carport.
- 6). Fix your trusses with your frame markings at the center of each 2-by-4 truss, using two nails top and bottom on both sides of the frame to secure the trusses in position.
- 7). Fix further cross supports between the 2-foot centers if necessary, and sheet with roofing materials as desired to fully protect your car from the weather.
