Activities During the Fall in Buffalo, New York

    Fall Foliage

    • Fall foliage in the Buffalo-Niagara region brings visitors to view its abundance and variety. Suburban parks, such as Cazenovia Park (bfloparks.org) along Cazenovia Creek in South Buffalo, and nearby state parks, such as Evangola State Park (evangolastatepark.com) just 25 minutes southwest of Buffalo on Lake Erie, are ideal for viewing the changing season without straying far from the metropolitan area. Each provide acres of old growth woods and re-treed areas of elm, sycamore, willow, red maple and oak varieties which turn to gold, red and purple during late September and early October.

    Niagara Falls

    • Visitors to Buffalo often choose to make the 20-minute drive to the northwest to the world-renowned Niagara Falls. Outlook points, where drivers can view the falls and the escarpment, such as Devil's Hole State Park (nysparks.com) exist along the 18-mile long Robert Moses Parkway. The parkway runs along the Niagara Gorge from Prospect Park in Buffalo to just north of the falls' hydro-electrical power station in Lewiston, New York.

    Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

    • Every fall on Thanksgiving morning, Buffalo residents and visitors are invited to lace up their running shoes and take part in the Buffalo Niagara YMCA Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot (ymcabuffaloniagara.org). The race course treks over 4.5 miles of Buffalo streets beginning near the Delaware Branch of the Buffalo Niagara YMCA and finishing downtown next to the Buffalo Convention Center. Runners can register through any Buffalo Niagara YMCA branch; the race starts on Thanksgiving morning at 9 a.m.

    Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival

    • Buffalo-style chicken wings appetizers are a famous local favorite within the Buffalo area and in 2007 the City of Buffalo Tourism Office (buffalonewyorktourism.com) declared Labor Day weekend to yearly be Chicken Wing Festival weekend. Held at the home of the Buffalo Bisons baseball team, Coca-Cola Field, guests can purchase tickets to area restaurants and local breweries showcase their famous wings and brews through cook-offs and wing eating contests. Specials are offered during the weekend on wings at many of Buffalo's restaurants.
