View a queen ant with the rest of its colony in late fall or late spring. Queen ants are usually out of their colonies in the colder months. Occasionally, she may come to the surface when the weather begins to warm.

Look beneath rotten wood or old trees to find queen ants. Peel the bark off of old trees because queens often lurk in these regions.

Identify a queen ant by its enlarged abdomen. Queen ants have such large mid-sections because this section of the body specializes in egg production. The queen ant's most primary role is to lay eggs.

Find an ant that has wings. Initially, queen ants have wings protruding from the abdomen but they often shed these wings after reproducing.
