- 1). First, make sure your lawn is free of weeds or crabgrass, or your seeds will be choked out by weeds before they can even sprout. Use weed killer to clear the area of weeds, or pull by hand. If you use chemicals to kill the weeds, make sure you wait several weeks (check the package for the specific amount of time) to allow the chemicals to dissipate before sowing your seeds.
- 2). Use a trowel to loosen the soil in the areas you want to sow your seeds. If it is a large area, use a hoe.
- 3). Mix fertilizer or a good topsoil in with the loose soil. Then, sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil.
- 4). Cover the seeds with a thin layer of good soil, and then cover that with an organic mulch. This will prevent birds from eating them.
- 5). Water the soil gently, so that you don't wash away the seeds. Continue to water daily until the seeds germinate (sprout). Then, water and fertilize as you would the rest of the lawn.
