How to Apply Glazing to Cabinets

    • 1). Remove all cabinet doors and hinges. Place the cabinet doors on a flat surface to be sanded and glazed. Place newspapers on the surface first if you want to protect it.

    • 2). Sand the outside of the cabinets and the doors with 800 grit sandpaper. Sand evenly, and scuff all of the areas that will be glazed. This will help the surface hold the paint and glaze.

    • 3). Apply two layers of latex paint to the cabinets and doors with a paintbrush. White looks nice with a dark glaze because the glaze will crackle and allow the white to show through.

    • 4). Apply the crackle glaze over the cabinets and doors with another paintbrush. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to apply the glaze correctly.

    • 5). Paint another coat of latex paint over the glazed cabinets and doors with the brush you used for the first two coats of latex. The paint will dry and crackle creating an antique finish. Re-hang your cabinet doors when the paint is fully dried.
