- 1). Set the headboard, footboard and the side rails on the floor on their sides. Line the boards together to form a box. The side rails will be on the outside with the headboard and footboard flush between them.
- 2). Apply wood glue to the ends of the headboard line the edge with the wide side of the side rail and screw in place using two screws. When screwing these pieces in, screw one in 1 inch from the top edge and the next 2 inches lower. Repeat for the other side of the headboard and both ends of the footboard. This creates a frame.
- 3). Cut the corner supports from the 1-by-6 by marking across the board at the halfway point. Then mark on each half a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite one. This gives you a rectangle divided into two squares and those squares divided into four triangles.
- 4). Cut along the lines with the saw.
- 5). Place one corner piece into each corner flush with the bottom of the frame boards. Screw the corner block into place with two screws on each side. Repeat with each corner block.
- 6). Measure the headboard and footboard to find the center point. Mark the location of the center point for each piece. Measure from the center point on the inside of the headboard to the center point on the inside of the footboard and cut the 2-by-6 piece to this measurement.
- 7). Measure the height of the installed 2-by-6 board. Not all wood measures precisely to the right size. Transfer this measurement to the side rails.
- 8). Install the 1-by-1-inch pieces to the height of the measurement of the 2-by-6. Use the level to make sure it is even. Attach the cleats to the side rails with 2-inch screws every 6 inches.
- 9). Cut batting about 4 inches wider than the wide side of the frame. Fold 1 inch over the frame and staple in place with the staple gun. Staple around the top edge first and flip the frame over to do the bottom side. Pull the batting snug, but do not stretch or pull tightly.
- 10
Purchase enough material to cover the frame in one piece, or cut the fabric to the measurements of the footboard and side rails plus 6 inches on each measurement. - 11
Apply material the same as the batting and staple in place. - 12
Flip the frame face up and lay the slats across the bed. Attach the slats into the cleats and the center support with screws every 4 inches
