How to Tie New Roof Shingles Into Existing Ones

    • 1). Slip a pry bar underneath the damaged shingle. Press down on the end of the pry bar to lift up the roofing nails holding the shingle in place.

    • 2). Take the shingle with you to a shingle supplier. They will help match the new shingle to your old ones.

    • 3). Slide the new shingle in place.

    • 4). Lift up the bottom of the shingle above the empty location and slide the new one underneath. Be careful not to crack the shingle. If the shingle above is brittle, cut four v-notches into the top of the new shingle and slide the new shingle into the gap, aligning the v-notches with the old nails.

    • 5). Pound four 1 1/4 inch roofing nails, evenly spaced, along the bottom of the shingle.
