How to Fix Garden Soil That Is Too Rich

    • 1). Dig up the soil in the garden to a depth of 1 foot. Completely remove the soil and pile it up next to the area you are excavating.

    • 2). Add a 4-inch layer of fresh, not aged, wood mulch to the removed soil. Cedar or pine bark mulch is ideal.

    • 3). Mix the mulch with the removed soil and then shovel it back into the excavated area.

    • 4). Add an additional 2 inches of mulch to the surface of the soil. Allow it to overwinter on the soil.

    • 5). Take a soil sample in the spring when the soil has thawed. Deliver or mail it to your county cooperative extension office for analysis. The nitrogen level should be significantly reduced.

    • 6). You will need to repeat this process annually because the nitrogen level may increase again.
