- Food should be nonperishable and easy to transport in backpacks. Examples are trail mix with peanuts, raisins, pretzels, M&Ms, granola, cheerios and dried fruit.
- Freeze-dried meals are available in packages and can be ready to eat with just hot water added. These meals are sold in any outdoor supply store and range from pasta dishes to desserts for one or two people.
- Small stoves are a good idea for those who will be in the wilderness because it's not always easy or feasible to make a campfire for cooking or boiling water. A stove can boil water for the freeze-dried packages.
- Water purifiers are important because water sources are not reliable and it is unwise to drink many natural-flowing springs. In addition to having proper fuel, staying hydrated is imperative.
- Many people will be at campsites but still in the wilderness. Even if campers have the convenience of a grill, it is a must to keep meat and other perishables cold so as to not risk disease.
