- The main advantage of a metal screen is the visibility it offers from inside the house. While fiberglass screens darken a window, aluminum rarely has this effect unless you choose a dark color such as black. They are extremely durable and resist rust. They are also tougher than fiberglass and do not tear as easily and, therefore, last longer.
- Because of the stiffness of the screening, metal screens do not bounce back to their original shape if the screen itself is pushed in, out or otherwise bowed. This can give the screen a wavy look. Replacement is also not cheap. Metal screens also do not give you the option of having a solar or retractable screen on the window like screens made of other materials.
- Screens were originally invented to keep bugs out while letting cooler air in. All screens reduce bugs to some extent and especially keep out large bothersome varieties. If you have a problem with tiny biting bugs, purchase a no-see-um screen, with a weave that is almost twice as small as regular screens. They are not made of metal but of fiberglass mesh.
- Solar screens reduce the amount of UV light that makes it into your home. These screens act in the same manner for your windows as sunglasses do for your eyes. They reduce glare and heat, as well, making them ideal for hot areas. Solar screens not only protect your eyes and the materials inside your home from damaging UV rays, but also can reduce cooling costs by up to 40 percent. They are not available in aluminum or steel.
