- 1). Make sure that your equipment - mask, fins, snorkel, etc. - fits properly and is in good working order.
- 2). Practice using your equipment in a pool or other environment free of waves, current and other hazards, and in shallow water where you can stand if necessary.
- 3). Choose a good snorkeling partner ' your "buddy" ' who is more experienced and can instruct you.
- 4). Know your limitations as a swimmer and only snorkel where you feel comfortable.
- 5). Take your time to double-check your equipment and survey the area.
