- 1). Call your local utility marking company and wait for them to come out and mark the underground wires and pipes on your property. Walk the perimeter of your garden and place a spot of orange paint on the ground every 5 feet to mark the locations of your posts. Remember to keep your posts at least 12 inches away from a utility line.
- 2). Set up the ladder 2 feet from your first post mark. Have an assistant hold the ladder firmly. Climb the ladder and drive a T post 24 inches into the ground with your sledge hammer. Be sure the bladed end of the T post is facing down and the hooks on the post are facing away from your garden.
- 3). Move the ladder and drive a T post into each spot. Drive an extra post 12 inches away from your first post to leave an opening small enough for you to enter the garden while keeping the deer out. Be sure that this post is just behind the first post so that the opening is not visible unless you are standing next to it.
- 4). Unroll your wire fencing. Have an assistant hold each end of the wire up to the T posts. Be sure your assistant pulls the fencing as tight as possible. Slide the wire into each retaining hook on every T post. Tap the retaining hooks closed with your hammer.
