- 1). Calculate how much wood paneling is needed for your library. Do this by measuring the width of your wall in feet. Since most wood panels are sold in 4-by-8-foot sheets, divide the wall measurement by four to get the number of sheets needed for each wall.
- 2). Determine if you want to use faux wood paneling or real wood paneling. Each has its own advantages. Faux wood paneling is significantly cheaper and easier to install, but the panels can crack easily. Real wood panels are sturdy and will last longer over time. The main downside with real wood is that maintenance is much more time-consuming.
- 3). Consider what type of surface will look good in your library, or whether you want unfinished or prefinished veneer panels. This also includes vinyl-surfaced wood panels. According to a paper published by Dr. Leona Hawks, House Furnishings Specialist at Utah State University, prefinished panels vary in quality and price. This largely depends how many plies make up the wood panel. For instance, three-ply veneers, though of very high quality, are among the most expensive wood panels on the market.
