- 1). Determine how wide of a gate that is needed. A typical gate is 36-inches wide. This is large enough for most push lawn mowers but not for the larger tractor size mowers. You also need to decide where the gate will be located.
- 2). Cut a 2 by 6 by 8-foot pressure treated board down to 6-foot in length. Use a miter saw set at 90-degrees to the wood for this step. You need to cut all the boards needed for the fence at one time. Divide the width of the gate by 5 and 1/2-inch. This is the actual size of a 2 by 6 piece of lumber. This will give you the number of boards needed for the front of the gate.
- 3). Layout the boards face down on a flat surface. Measure the width of the actual gate that you just laid out. Use a tape measure for this. Cut (2) 2 by 4's to the length you just measured.
- 4). Run a bead of construction adhesive along the back of the 2 by 4's you just cut. Place them 9-inches above the bottom and below the top of the door. Screw them in position so that they are perpendicular to the 2 by 6 boards. Place two 2 AND 1/2-Inch exterior deck screw into every 2 by 6 board across the width of the gate.
- 5). Place a 2 by 4 across the two 2 by 4's you just screwed in place. Run the 2 by 4 from the top left corner down to the bottom right corner, place the out side edge even with each other. Use a pencil to mark the board so you can cut it to fit as a diagonal brace for the gate. Apply the construction adhesive and screw in place as before.
