Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a Latin American holiday based on a belief that the spirit of deceased loved ones return home for a celebration with those they left behind. The living sing, dance and create altars in honor of these friends and family members. You too can celebrate the lives of the loved ones you've lost on Day of the Dead at these Houston area locations. Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts -- MECA presents its annual Dia de los Muertos: Honoring our Past, Celebrating our Future on Friday, October 26th, Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th. Festivities feature food from the Americas, arts and crafts, an altar competition and a Calavera Fashion Show. Music, dance, theater, and arts present a playfully mockery of death and a reaffirmation of life. This event takes place at the Dow School (1900 Kane St.) located in Houston’s Old Sixth Ward, 77007. Free admission for Saturday and Sunday's event.

Lawndale Art Center – This venue celebrates its 25th Dia de los Muertos, a celebration of the music, art, and practices of Mexico. Lots of events tied to this celebration including an exhibition, Gala/Silent Auction, Musical Ofrenda, Papel Pacado Workshop, Sugar Skull Workshop, and the Family Day Fiesta (Saturday, November 3 from noon to 4 p.m.). Admission to the family festival is free to the public and includes children's actvities and live performances from the Houston Grand Opera, Mixteco Ballet Folklorico and Paedarchy Puppets.

Casa Ramirez - Houston art gallery and boutique Casa Ramirez will celebrate Day of the Dead beginning October 6th (and every Saturday in October) with a free course explaining the tradition and the culture behind it. On Saturday, October 27, Danza Azteca Teokali will lead a procession through the streets of the Houston Heights. Cactus Music - Carlos Hernandez presents his 6th annual Till Death Do Us Part Day of the Dead Rock Stars Exhibit in the Record Ranch Gallery of Cactus Music. The artist utilizes screenprinting, woodworking and lithography to depict and honor deceased musicians including Selena, Etta James, and most recently. Mike D. of the Beastie Boys.
