- 1). Unscrew the p-trap lock nuts that attach the p-trap to the drain pipe on the sink and the drain pipe in the wall. In most cases you can do this by hand, but if there is resistance then use an adjustable plumber's wrench.
- 2). Remove the p-trap assembly.
- 3). Remove the locknut that holds the drain assembly in place from the bottom of the sink with a spud wrench. According to San Diego Plumbers, a spud wrench is specifically designed to remove the locknut on a sink drain assembly. If there is resistance then spray some lubricant around the locknut, and then use a back and forth motion on the spud wrench to get it to move.
- 4). Unscrew the pop-up drain assembly if there is one. The easiest way to do this is to use an adjustable plumber's wrench to remove the pivot nut. The pivot nut is the assembly that allows the pop-up bar to pass into the drain pipe and move the drain plug up and down.
- 5). Push the drain assembly through the bottom of the sink by pushing on the drain pipe and simultaneously pulling the drain out from the top. If you need a helper to do this then bring someone in. If you do not guide the drain assembly out from the top it will fall and scratch your sink basin.
- 6). Remove the old putty from around the drain opening with a putty knife.
