How to Remove Baseboard to Install Carpet

    • 1). Cut the seam between the top of the baseboard and the wall with a utility knife. This cuts through the paint or caulk that helps seal the baseboard to the wall. Cut the corner seams between baseboards as well.

    • 2). Slip a stiff wide putty knife blade between the wall and baseboard, starting at an outside corner end. Tap the putty knife handle with a hammer until the putty knife blade is halfway behind the molding.

    • 3). Place the end of a small pry bar between the molding and the putty knife blade. Tap the pry bar as necessary to begin separating the baseboard one inch away from the wall. The putty knife blade helps to protect the wall from the pry bar.

    • 4). Move the putty knife down the baseboard once the end is separated from the wall slightly. Continue using the pry bar between the baseboard and the putty knife to separate the baseboard. Once the entire baseboard is separated, use the pry bar to remove the baseboard completely from the wall.
