How to Pitch Overhand

    • 1). Place your feet on the rubber portion of the pitcher's mound roughly shoulder width apart. Ensure that your heels are making contact with the rubber while your toes hang slightly off the front part of it.

    • 2). Place your throwing hand with the baseball into the baseball glove. Keep your hands and glove raised at chest level. Grip the baseball however you would like, depending on which pitch you're throwing. It is important that you keep your grip on the baseball hidden inside the glove so that the batter is not clued into what type of pitch you are about to throw.

    • 3). Drop your left foot back several inches and pivot your right foot to the edge of the pitching rubber, making sure to keep your foot on the rubber. Your body should turn toward third base as you do this. This begins the windup process. This is the windup process for a right-handed pitcher. If you throw with your left hand, you would mirror these steps.

    • 4). Lift your left leg up until your thigh is parallel to the ground. You should be able to keep your balance. If you cannot maintain your balance in this position, it is possible that you have lifted your thigh too high.

    • 5). Bring both hands down and away from each other simultaneously. It is important that you do this with your glove hand and baseball hand at the same time. Lower your left leg while you are doing this. Both arms and your left leg should finish their drops at about the same time.

    • 6). Slightly bend your right knee to help gather your body weight. As you do this, glide your left leg out toward home place as smoothly as possible. Start pushing off your right leg as you do this to being gathering momentum.

    • 7). Slide your throwing arm back behind your shoulder. Begin a throwing motion by quickly slinging your arm forward. Make sure your hand is slightly higher than your shoulder when you move past it with your throwing motion. Glide your hips toward home plate for added mobility with your throwing motion.

    • 8). Begin releasing the baseball when your hand moves a few inches past the front of your shoulder. Your left foot should be making contact with the ground as you do this. Let your arm continue downward after you release the ball. Your right leg should be lifting slightly as you follow through with your throwing motion.
