LASIK Surgery and Teenagers

LASIK is exciting for many adults because the surgery help them remove eyeglasses or contact lenses for ever.
The truth is that LASIK is gaining popularity among the large population who has refractive errors.
Nowadays, more and more teenagers are wondering that whether LASIK is also suitable for them.
These teenagers also want to get permanent vision correction from LASIK procedure.
It is quite reasonable because corrective lenses are bothersome in some cases.
Many teenagers wearing eyeglasses and contact lenses are eager to get a natural appearance.
Parents are also concerned with this problem that whether their kids are eligible for LASIK surgery.
Eye safety should be the first consideration.
If LASIK procedure can be performed in teenagers as effectively and safely as in adults, children are much likely to have a better performance in school, enjoy more recreation and sporting activities.
These aspects are quite important in promoting self esteem and confidence in children.
It is widely known that LASIK has been used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism in adults.
However, only patients over 18 years old are allowed to receive the surgery, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The reason is that the eye continues to develop until the age of 20.
Children under this age are still under changes in eye shape and size.
As their eyesight is still not stable, visual outcomes of LASIK in children are unpredictable.
The surgery also involves more risks.
It is quite likely that a second LASIK is needed when a teen has reached early adulthood.
Although the minimum age requirement for LASIK is 20, some children with special eye conditions are allowed to receive the surgery.
In rare cases, some ophthalmologists will perform LASIK for teenagers who suffer from severe vision conditions.
For example, LASIK can be used on an off-label basis to treat amblyopia in children.
Teens who have failed to receive vision improvement from standard treatments such as eyeglasses, contacts and patching can resort to LASIK.
Other eligible teenagers are those who have chronic noncompliance or intolerance of standard treatments.
