How to Take Headshots of Children

    • 1). Accentuate the child's features, particularly the eyes. Make sure the lights are highlighted and reflected to add dimension and sparkle to the eyes. Use simple, even lighting and avoid dramatic shadows and angles.

    • 2). Instruct your subject to dress in casual, comfortable clothing. Children are easily distracted, and uncomfortable clothing will not help. Clothing should be age appropriate and not contain distracting patterns.

    • 3). Avoid adult poses that cause headshots to look unnatural. Using seated, casual poses will add a natural air to the finished image. Also avoid excessive makeup or retouching that detract from a child's natural look.

    • 4). Working quickly is the key to successful childrens' photography. Children have limited attention spans.
