- 1). Determine how wide the binding will be. Normal bindings usually range from 2 inches to around 4 inches, but they can be any width you wish.
- 2). Double the width of the binding and add 1 inch. This will be the width of the fabric strips that will be used to make the binding.
- 3). Determine how long the binding will be. Measure each side of the quilt and add twice the width of the binding and 2 inches to each side. If the side of the quilt measures 60 inches and the binding is 3 inches wide, your binding would be 68 inches long.
- 4). Cut strips of fabric to make the binding. The strips may need to be sewn together to achieve the proper length.
- 5). Fold 1/2 inch of the fabric in toward the center all the way down the length of the fabric on both sides. Press with a hot iron to form creases down both sides of the binding.
- 6). Fold the binding in half lengthwise and iron the fold to form a third crease down the center of the binding.
- 1). Place the open edge of the binding over the raw edge of the quilt so that the quilt is sandwiched between the two open edges of the binding.
- 2). Pin the open edge of the binding to the quilt edge so that the binding overlaps the edge of the quilt at least 1/2 inch. Start in the center of each side so that there is an equal amount of binding hanging from each end.
- 3). Stitch the binding to each side of the quilt with a straight stitch or decorative stitch on a sewing machine. Start and stop the stitching where the pieces of binding overlap each other.
- 4). Finish the corners of the binding by folding in the ends of the binding and placing one piece of binding inside the other. Following your previous stitches, continue your stitches so that they reach the outer edge of the binding.
- 5). Use an invisible stitch to close the open edges of binding at the corners.
