If you have already decided to visit Paramount, you probably know that it is conveniently located to cities like Redondo Beach, Los Angeles and Long Beach. However, there is a lot of things about Paramount you don't know yet and by learning more you will be able to plan your trip to Paramount better.
Other that Paramount's convenient, central location, its weather is probably the second biggest feature that makes Paramount so popular as a vacation destination. Like its neighboring cities in the Southern California area, Paramount has a climate that is called subtropical or Mediterranean. This type of climate is characterized by dry and mildly warm summers and somewhat wet mildly cool winters. In other words, Paramount has a mild temperature all year long. The temperature usually doesn't exceed 85 degrees, which is the average high in July and it usually does dip too far below 49 degrees, which is the average low temperature in January.
Though Paramount only takes up 4.8 square miles, it has a population of more than 54,000 people (according to the census that was taken in 2012). While Paramount's population grew dramatically from the mid to late 1990s to the early 2000s, the number has been decreasing slightly in recent years. Paramount is a seemingly youthful city because most of its residents are under the age of 40.
Paramount's history goes back to the late 1700s when it was divided into two different ranchos that were owned and ruled by Spain. After the Mexican-American War in the 1840s, the area that is now Paramount was ceded to the United States with a much larger portion of what is now the state of California. Later on, in 1948, Paramount finally became an established city of Los Angeles County. In this early part of establishment, Paramount served as a meeting place for hay traders who lived and worked in the area. They would meet each day to decide on the price of hay, that price would then be applied as the standard hay-price by the New York mercantile markets.
As Paramount's population has grown over the years and become more culturally eclectic, so have the restaurants and stores. As a result you can find just about any type of cuisine you are craving, including, Hawaiian, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, Jamaican, BBQ, Pizza, American, Italian Chinese and lots more. If you'll be going out for drinks, remember that last call in Paramount is 2am and most of the restaurants, bars and lounges offer happy hour specials until 7pm.
The eclectic population found in Paramount means there are lots of different cultural festivals throughout the year. Some of these include the Irish Faire and Music Festival, usually held in March, the National Hispanic Heritage Festival held in September and the South Bay Greek Festival held in Redondo Beach every July.
It is a good idea to learn a little about the highways and major roads in the Paramount area, especially if you will be renting a car while visiting or driving to Paramount. One reason Paramount is so convenient to so many different cities is that it is bordered with highways on all sides. The Artesia Freeway, also called SR 91 is the southern border, you can take this to get to Anaheim. The Long Beach Freeway, also called Interstate 710 makes Paramount's Westside and can take you to Long Beach or Los Angeles. Paramount's eastern edge is bordered by Lakewood Boulevard, also called SR19, which can take you to Los Angeles or Long Beach. Lastly, the Glenn Anderson/Century Freeway, or Interstate 105, borders Paramount's northern edge. This is the highway you would use to get to Los Angeles International Airport, Redondo Beach, Norwalk or Interstate 605.
Some of the major thoroughfares in Paramount include Alondra Boulevard, Rosecrans Avenue, Downey Avenue, Paramount Boulevard and Somerset Boulevard. Each of these roads are easy connections to the neighboring towns of Lakewood, Bellflower and Downey. The best part is that if the road is named one name in Paramount, it doesn't usually change names when you get to the next town. So if there is a restaurant, store, park or other attraction in one of these neighboring cities that is on a street that is also in Paramount you can just get on that road in Paramount and follow it to the next city.
