Do It Yourself Carpet Repairs

    Before You Begin

    • Before attempting any of these methods for repairing your carpet, call to your insurance company to determine if your homeowner's insurance policy covers carpet damage. The insurance company may cover the cost of replacing the carpet, if the repair is in a hard-to-patch area.

    Shave the Carpet

    • Sometimes the surface of the carpet is damaged from a spill or a burn, but the damage does not go through to the roots of the carpet. This is especially true for very dense carpets, such as shags. Use a razor blade to shave off the very ends of the carpet, being careful to shave as few of the threads as possible to repair the damage.

    Glue the Carpet

    • Take some carpet fibers from an area that sees little traffic, such as a closet or under a heavy piece of furniture. Use a razor to trim the damaged carpet down to the carpet backing. Use a tiny, flat screwdriver or nail file board to place waterproof adhesive onto the carpet backing. Place the fiber strands into the adhesive. Be careful not to get any glue on the surrounding fibers. Let the adhesive dry for about 24 hours. When the glue is dry, trim the repaired fibers back to carpet level.

    Plug the Carpet

    • Cut out the entire piece of damaged carpet and replace with a new piece. Know beforehand that if your carpet is very worn or faded, the patch might be easy to spot. Do the smallest patch possible for the best appearance. A triangle patch looks better than a rectangle patch for small patch jobs. It is easier to reproduce and cut for the patch piece. If the repair is large, use carpet tape. The tape balls up too much for smaller repairs. For a small patch, use waterproof adhesive. Do not roll back carpets more than a couple of feet to repair them, because you might cause the carpet to ripple or stretch.
