Troubleshooting a Panasonic Palmcorder

    Picture Issues

    • There are several different issues that can arise when it comes to the actual picture quality. If when watching a recorded tape there are smudges or spots on the image, there may be dust on the lens. Check the lens and clean it. This can be done with standard eyeglass cleaner and wipes. Do not use clothing fabric because you can end up scratching the lens. In addition, dust can collect on the inside of the camera. This can cause breakup in the picture and pixelation. Use a cleaning tape to prevent this. This tape works just like any other miniDV tape. Insert it into the camera, switch the camera to the "VCR" mode and press "Play." Let the tape run for a few minutes, then stop and eject it. The tape has a special chemical on the that will help clean the inside of the camera.

    Audio Isses

    • Many audio issues come from weather elements or how you're holding the camera. Be careful when holding the camera because the microphone on some models is right under the lens. If your finger covers or touches the microphone you will experience rustling or other harsh audio issues. In addition, if it's extremely windy, you'll hear a noise similar to loud static. There isn't much you can do about it once you have recorded the content, so if the wind begins to blow, cover the microphone with your hand---without actually touching it. As long as you don't need the sound this will help protect the audience's ears later.

    Static Lines

    • One other problem you may encounter is lines of static across the length of the image. This static line will look just like the static of an old VHS tape. However, even moving the tracking will not remove the static line completely. This usually occurs when taking the camera from an extremely warm place to a cold environment, or vice-versa (such as going from the trunk of a hot car to a cold, air conditioned house). There are parts in the camera that will expand and contract. If you record while these pieces are expanding or contracting you may experience recording problems. It is best to avoid any extreme temperature change when you can.
