- 1). Choose a location where you'd like to have your photograph taken, such as in front of a landmark. Be aware of lighting in your location -- standing directly in front of a light, for example, will cause you to come out as a silhouette. Similarly, in a low-light situation, your image may not show up as clearly as you'd like.
- 2). Consider your costume and props if the photograph is for professional purposes. Think about what you want the picture to say about you. If your picture is to accompany an article about being a writer, you may wish to include pens, paper, books, glasses and a laptop.
- 3). Position yourself in front of the photographer, ensuring that you are in the camera's range. You do not necessarily have to be at the center of the photo but ensure you are within the frame -- the photographer should let you know if you need to adjust your position.
- 4). Stand with one foot slight in front of the other and shift your weight to your back foot -- this will make you appear slimmer in the picture. Try to relax -- do not stand or sit too rigidly to avoid looking too stiff and posed.
- 5). Wait for the photographer to be ready, decide on a pose and stay still until the photo has been taken. If you move while the photo is being taken, you risk a blurry image. Alternatively, look away, then look back at the camera just as the picture is about to be taken to give the photograph a more natural look -- sometimes holding a pose can come across fake and forced.
