- 1). Sketch your banner design on paper. Use colored pencils to define background colors and any contrasting colors.
- 2). Add symbols to your sketch. Some ideas include a cross, a lamb or a dove. Sketch the symbols on another piece of paper, then cut them out. Lay them on your banner sketch and arrange them the way you want.
- 3). Stencil on some inspirational words if you desire. Some examples might be "peace," "love" and "hope." Scripture chapters and verses are also popular choices.
- 1). Cut out the banner according to the size you want. With fabric glue create a 1-inch hem on all four sides of the banner.
- 2). Hem the top of the banner about 3 1/2 inches. You need enough space to insert the dowel in the top for hanging later.
- 3). Using the paper symbols and words as patterns, cut out symbols and words from contrasting fabrics. Be sure to use sharp scissors for smooth edges.
- 4). Arrange the cutouts on the banner, then use your fabric glue to secure them.
- 5). Add border embellishments with complementary colors or patterns. They should be about 2 inches wide. Use fabric glue to attach the border embellishments to the banner.
- 1). Slide the wooden dowel into the large hem you created at the top of the banner. You don't have to paint the dowel, since it will be hidden.
- 2). If you're hanging the banner, add the decorative rope. Tie the rope to each end of the dowel and secure it with a knot.
- 3). Knot tassels or metallic streamers from the ends of the dowels before hanging. You can also hang or drape loose fabric to give your banner an airy touch.
