Set a timer for one minute and begin reading the page of a book aloud as fast as you can. Once the timer goes off, stop, count the number of words you read and note it. This is where you will begin and this number will be the basis for your improvement. - 2). Read the same passage again and try to break your record. If you find you are stumbling over words and not pronouncing them correctly, slow it down. Practice reading the words aloud slowly and then speeding up.

Diction exercises used by actors can be helpful to improve speech speed.Comstock/Comstock/Getty Images
Recite the alphabet, saying each letter phonetically four times. For example, say, "A-A-A-A, B-B-B-B, C-C-C-C," all the way through the alphabet. Make sure you move your mouth and face fully to sound out each letter. This is an exercise some actors do to prepare their diction for the stage. - 4). Gather a full story or thought and begin to say it out loud with varying speeds. As you tell this story, note any "filler words" you use, such as "Um," "Like" or "Hmm." Eliminate those words to increase speed and clarity.
- 5). Practice and keep a detailed journal of your progress so you can measure your improved speech speed.
