Deramaxx, the trade name of deracoxib, is a pain medication used solely for dogs with orthopedic conditions. Manufactured by Novartis Animal Health, U.S. Inc., it's available only by veterinary prescription, not over the counter. Deramaxx comes in chewable, beef-flavored tablet form. Do not give dogs taking Deramaxx any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), any other type of pain medication or sulfa drugs. Puppies and dogs weighing less than 4 lbs. should not use Deramaxx. - Several hours before undergoing orthopedic surgery, veterinarians use Deramaxx on the canine patient. It's given ahead of time to keep the postsurgical pain to a minimum. Before surgery, dogs must get a complete checkup to determine if any pre-existing conditions preclude the use of Deramaxx, such as heart or kidney disease.
- After surgery, veterinarians prescribe Deramaxx for up to a week to control postoperative pain.The drug, as an NSAID of the coxib classification, is effective in aiding dogs' recovery from the inflammation and discomfort following orthopedic surgery. According to "Understanding Deramaxx" by Edward Murray, administer only the minimum amount of the drug needed for pain management. Serious adverse effects have been reported, including severe ulceration of the stomach and other gastrointestinal problems.
- Osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease affecting the joints, affects roughly 20 percent of adult dogs. These formerly active canines may limp, have difficulty getting up, climbing stairs or getting into and out of cars. Deramaxx, prescribed by the veterinarian, offers relief to arthritic dogs by easing their joint pain. It is not a cure, but can ease symptoms. For this chronic condition, Deramaxx is prescribed long-term for best results. Side effects involving the liver, kidneys or digestive tract may occur.
