- 1). Measure the length and width of the floor using the tape measure; round measurements to the next higher whole foot. If a room has an irregular shape, break the floor into smaller sections that can be easily measured.
- 2). Multiply the length and width of the floor to find the total area in square feet. If you had to break the floor into smaller sections, find their areas separately and add after.
- 3). Call a local flooring supply center to find the total area coverage (in square feet) of each hardwood flooring bundle; most hardwood flooring is available in bundles rather than loose stock. Also, consult with a flooring specialist for underlayment and fastening requirements for the hardwood flooring you will be using.
- 4). Divide the total area of the job (in square feet) calculated in step 2 by the area coverage per hardwood flooring bundle to calculate the total number of flooring bundles that will be needed; round bundles to the next whole number if the result is a decimal. Calculate the amount of any fasteners (type and amount will vary depending on hardwood type) and underlayment (if needed) the same way.
