As the visual arts center of UC Berkeley, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive constitute one of the largest university museums in the U.S.

The art museum's collection includes historical and contemporary Asian art, early American painting, and contemporary international art, and California and Bay Area art.

The Pacific Film Archive hosts a series of festivals and daily screenings throughout the year. The PFA also has a large collection of international, classic, and avant-garde films.

The Oakland museum is devoted to the history, art and natural landscape of California. Collections at the Cantor Arts Center include 4000 years of art history and span a variety of cultures. The Center has the largest gathering of Rodin bronzes outside of Paris, with its stunning Rodin Sculpture Garden poised just outside Cantor Arts Center on the Stanford campus. The Center's cafe has an outdoor view to the sculpture garden.

Since 1935, the Marin History Museum has offered exhibition and educational programs on the traditions of Marin County. The museum's growing collection includes photographs, historical artifacts, library and archive. You can also take a San Rafael History Walk with a volunteer guide from the museum.

San Mateo County History Museum is in the 1910 Old County Courthouse -- which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The exhibits focus on the historical legacy of San Mateo County and include items from the permanent collection as well as changing exhibitions.

The San Mateo County History Museum also includes two other historical locations in the area: Sanchez Adobe and Woodside Store. The Sanchez Adobe site (in Pacifica) offers a look at different periods of local history on the grounds of the historic adobe home. The Woodside Store (in Woodside) is a country shop restored to its 1880 appearance.More »
